Letter: Stop the drilling leases

Garfield County Commissioner Tom Jankovsky recently signed a letter that states the Bureau of Land Management should give “special consideration” to 25 gas leases in Thompson Divide.

Elected officials in Carbondale, Glenwood and Pitkin County want them canceled. Hundreds of locals packed the BLM meetings with the same voice. Thirty thousand people submitted comments. Yard signs are everywhere. How much clearer can the public be?

I contend that these leases are not in the best interests of Garfield County. They fail to meet the standards of the Comprehensive Plan and threaten the health, safety and welfare of the people of Garfield County. Economically, we lose more than we gain if the wells are permitted.

Jankovsky has an obligation to represent his district and call for the cancellation of the Thompson Divide leases.
