Letter: Speak out for Thompson Divide

Speak out for Thompson Divide

While many of your readers may interpret the Bureau of Land Management’s recent decision to extend the life of leases in the Thompson Divide as a bad thing, they should realize the opportunity that’s been granted to the public to protect the Thompson Divide once and for all.

On Monday, BLM announced it will look at the validity of leases in the Thompson Divide — a process that can, and should, result in the cancellation of leases in the Thompson Divide. The process begins with a 30-day comment period during which time the community has the ability to direct this process going forward.

Submit your comment at http://www.SaveThompsonDivide.org/BLM and tell the BLM that development in the Thompson Divide threatens our water, our wildlife and the economic vitality of the area. The deadline is May 2.

Just as important, the BLM has announced meetings throughout the Roaring Fork Valley to collect public comment from the community related to drilling in the Thompson Divide. Please join us at one of these meeting in telling BLM to simply save the Thompson Divide, once and for all!

• April 15, 4-7 p.m. – Glenwood Springs Community Center

• April 16, 4-7 p.m. – Carbondale Town Hall

• April 17, 3-6 p.m. – Pitkin County Library in Aspen

Now is the time if we’re to be successful in conserving a piece of land that supports the local economy and countless Coloradans who rely on the land. Please join us in asking the BLM to save the Thompson Divide.

Blanca and Cavanaugh O’Leary
