Shame on the Princess and the Times

Dear Editor:

I cannot express strongly enough my disappointment and disgust in reading Alison Berkley Margo’s description of procuring her new pug puppy from a Kansas breeder (“Our 5-pound pug of joy,” commentary, July 11, The Aspen Times).

This is Aspen, where we have the best no-kill shelter in the country, and right before the biggest fund-raiser for this amazing facility that has worked so hard to promote dog adoption, and The Aspen Times features an editorial that is so contrary to everything those of us who promote dog adoption have worked so hard for.

There are pug rescue organizations all over this country with dogs of all ages that need homes, and by promoting breeders you are promoting suffering and cruelty to those animals that live their lives in cages whose sole purpose is to reproduce. I obviously don’t know the particulars of this Kansas breeder, but there was a missed opportunity here to save a life of a soul that was discarded or over bred for greed. By supporting breeders instead of shelters, you are supporting the continuation of unwanted and abused animals.

By publishing this column, The Aspen Times has undone so much good that the Aspen Animal Shelter and all other Animal Rescue organizations have been trying to do for years — get people to adopt.

Shame on you.

Nina Zale

Poschman can’t muzzle the public

I express my concern about Pitkin County commissioner and chair of Pitkin’s Board of Health Greg Poschman’s statement at the Jan.13, 2022, Board of Health meeting.
