Letter: Saving our history

Saving our history

A big thanks to Scott Condon and The Aspen Times for the article covering the new Basalt History Tour. We in Basalt are proud of it, and more so, the great history of the folks that made Basalt and the midvalley.

But we are quickly losing an opportunity to preserve that history. Every year the old-timers who lived through the early and mid-1900s and who still possess photos and stories of those times are moving away, or sadder still, dying. Often their heirs don’t value the old shoeboxes of photos and pieces of memorabilia hanging in the garage. We don’t want those things to slowly decay into oblivion. So we are asking that you old-timers or heirs allow us to preserve them, while leaving them to you.

We have labor and funds available to copy those pre-1950 photos and preserve them for years to come, making them available for all of us who cherish our history. We can either send someone to your home with scanning equipment and copy them in your home or will be happy to pick up the photos/articles, copy them at our offices and return them to you. Our objective is to not lose a single image of our valley’s past.

If you are willing to allow us to copy your heritage photos/images, contact bhegberg@sopris.net or call 970-379-0742, and I will make all the arrangements. Alternatively, you can contact the Basalt Regional Heritage Society at mail@basaltheritage.org or at 970-927-4693. If your collection is more Aspen/upper-valley oriented, contact the Aspen Historical Society at 970-925-3721

Thanks so much for opening up your private history and memories so we all can honor the original folks who made the valley such a great place.

Bill Hegberg
