LetteR: Responsible development for Basalt

Basalt Town Council’s new map-development plan for the Pan and Fork property shows less development and more open space. Hopefully this is a win-win for everyone.

Now that this has been determined, the community needs to take the next step and move forward.

The development portion of the property needs to be compatible with the park. A restaurant with a brew pub above could work as a destination location for valley locals in winter and summer. The community needs to share its ideas in order to plan the recreation possibilities for the park.

Low-profile buildings are best on the Pan and Fork parcel. A hotel would be more appropriate on the foreclosure property across the street on the river. Redevelop the foreclosed properties before breaking virgin ground. I’m not suggesting no development; I want people to be smart and responsible with their decisions.

Whatever is built, it needs to add to the historical characteristics of old town Basalt. The cake-shaped architecture does not fit. We need a creative architect so we don’t end up looking like the Willits Town Center (a bunch of square boxes).

I want to thank Town Council for your support and time on this issue. I believe the community will come to a compromise. Let the grass grow and redevelop before we break precious ground.
