Letter: Rec center bad for wallet and environment
Rec center bad for wallet and environment
The Crown Mountain Park ballot measure barely passed a few years ago.
The original Crown Mountain Park was sold to us with an outdoor recreational focus. That was fine, but now the district wants to expand its activities beyond its original focus. Those proposed items are both expensive to build and maintain. It seems that the district board has a Champaign pallet but is on a beer budget.
My district neighbors have very few children and many are on fixed incomes. As such, the need for these amenities seems like a luxury they cannot afford. We are a small rural community and unlike Glenwood, Snowmass and Aspen, lack the substantial population, need or tax base to build and support such amenities. Let us rather raise tax dollars for the necessary items such as better education and fixing our roads rather than the luxury of an expensive and maintenance intensive swimming pool and other amenities.
If swimming and the other proposed district items are so important, let’s ask the district to think outside the box. I imagine that Aspen and Snowmass would gladly accept our residents to their facilities where the district could help subsidize their use. They are not overwhelmed with participants and regardless of their community subsidies and much larger customer base, would relish more patrons to help defray their costs being their expenses are fixed regardless of number of customers.
I think our carbon footprint would be reduced if the district residents used the facilities in Aspen, Glenwood or Snowmass rather than building and maintaining a new facility. One must weigh the carbon generation in terms of extra driving versus the construction and maintenance of the proposed facility, the probable under-utilization of the proposed facility (high carbon generation per user) and a more efficient utilization the Aspen, Glenwood and Snowmass facilities that already generate carbon, which would not be significantly increased with more users.

Vote for Kimbo Brown-Schirato for council. She’s the right choice at the right time for Aspen. She listens, works extremely well with others, and she’s effective.
