Letter: Public opinion ignored over Thompson drilling

Public opinion ignored over Thompson drilling

It is sad to see applications for extensions to the gas leases in the Thompson Divide area. It is a complicated mess — the Bureau of Land Management not doing adequate review on the initial leases, but granting them anyway, the companies not developing the leases within the granted time frame and then asking for suspensions (extensions), and now asking for extended suspensions.

What seems clear is that the public sentiment is being ignored. The public wants the area protected.

The Thompson Divide is a special area. The leases never should have been given in the first place, and the extensions to the leases should have been denied when the original contracts ran out. This time, let’s hope the BLM gets it right and ends the leases, taking one more threat away from drilling in a special area.
