Letter: Parents need to teach kids respect

Parents need to teach kids respect

The recent incident involving the Aspen Police Department and a high school student was unfortunate. I will not pass judgement on the officer. The powers that be are in charge of reviewing this and deciding whether procedure was followed.

I would like to weigh in on the actions of the student and his parents.

As parents, especially those with sons, have a serious responsibility to teach them certain life skills. At the top of the list in my book is how to interact with the police, especially when adrenaline is involved.

The proper conduct to be taught is always act with respect and courtesy when interacting with the law. Being sarcastic, disrespectful or worse, showing any physicality toward a police officer, will only escalate the situation and end badly. Had this young man acted this way in Denver with the Denver police, or any other major city police department, he would have gotten much worse than he did here in Aspen. Maybe a seminar with the police is in order to ensure an incident like this does not happen again.
