Letter: Now the real work begins

Last week’s elections may have changed the political make up of our state, but as a community concerned about environmental justice, our commitment to enacting climate solutions remains the same. Ultimately, what determines our failure or success in solving the most pressing issue of our time depends not on what happened on Election Day, but what happens after Election Day.

The Roaring Fork Valley chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby is working to enact a market-based solution to climate change — a fee on carbon at the source of extraction that is then returned to residents. This program, touted by conservative economists, would shift our energy dependence away from fossil fuels and create competition and jobs in the renewable-energy sector, reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent in 20 years and make a clean-energy future a reality.

I want to congratulate Colorado’s new Sen. Cory Gardner and U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton on their wins in the House and Senate and encourage them both to work across party lines on non-partisan issues like climate, and prove that Congress can work together on issues that are important to us a state, a country and a planet. And I encourage others to communicate your priorities to our elected officials, as climate activists it’s our responsibility to do so, no matter who is in office. I believe our government will still respond to the will of the people, so long as the people tell their government what they want.
