Letter: No place like home
From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my family, I would like to say “thank you” to Scott Condon for taking time out of his day to cover one of the most special times my son Oliver has ever experienced (“Basalt’s biggest football fan gets the call,” The Aspen Times, Oct. 6). In your article, Scott quoted me as saying, “Because of where we live.” This was my response to his question “Why is your son so popular?” The reason is quite simple: We are truly blessed by the beauty of our surroundings, but it is the people in our valley who make the difference in our daily lives. Oliver has had many challenges and surgeries in his life with more to come, but the support of his friends has made his will to succeed strong. Everyone who knows him sees the strength and determination he has to just be “one of the guys” and be involved in activities that all of our children have. It’s not easy being the kid on the outside looking in, and for this reason I find any opportunities for Oliver to be the kid on the inside looking out!
This experience was once again accomplished due to Basalt Longhorn football coaches Carl Frerichs and Ralph Smalley. They arranged for Oliver to run the ball against Coal Ridge and created an experience that he will always remember. When Oliver and I attend practice after school, these fine men stress the importance of teamwork, hard work and education. They include Oliver as if he were a “typical” kid, and it is educators like those two who also make a difference in our community. There are many other people who believe in Oliver, and you all know who you are. I have said more than once that if I could find a better place to raise my family, I would move there. After more than 30 years in the Roaring Fork Valley and being blessed with two incredible boys, I am happy to say that there’s no place like home.
