No dice is a good thing

Dear Editor:

Congratulations to Dwayne Romero on his appointment to Aspen City Council. I feel the best two applicants made it to the end and we avoided a roll of the die to determine a winner. It is a new day and Aspen has a fresh start.

My hat goes off to Steve Skadron and the City Council on the process they followed in appointing Dwayne. Steve displayed grace and wisdom throughout the process. The process of answering the questions the council posed for applicants and going through the first round of the interview process gave me a new apparition of the issues and challenges we face as a community. I fully believe Aspen has a council that will be balanced and reflective in deliberations and policy choices. We are fortunate to have five such capable and dedicated people at the helm of our city.

I hope that this is the last time a council will need to appoint a member. Look for a ballot measure in the next election to amend the Home Rule Charter to establish a special election to fill vacancies on the council. Perhaps we can also revisit the timing of our elections. It does seem that our future should be determined at a time when most of our population is in town. Thanks to Wendle Whiting for raising this topic, which has been discussed in the past. We do need the engagement of the younger segment in town.
