Letter: Misinformation in the mail

I received from Base2 proponents two gigantic, slick mailings paid for by Mark Hunt’s $50,000 “Vote for Base2” campaign. They presume that voters are ill-informed or stupid or that their votes can be bought by twisted information.

One of the mailings indicated that the Base2 hotel would create “more parking,” be “greener” and decrease traffic and pollution because the gas station would be gone. What? How’s that? Two hundred cars would decrease to 20 because no one can find the other gas station on Main two blocks away?

The mailing also states that the belated promise for on-site parking somehow “helps our downtown,” creates a “better neighbor” and translates to less traffic. Every Main Street hotel is a good neighbor and has on-site parking, but traffic continues to roll on in, and parking remains a problem.

Based on the mailing image, the proposed parking garage would descend for five stories — not likely — but remember when Hunt explained in detail how it was impossible to create underground parking or put in car elevators to accommodate 20-plus cars? Has anyone seen the architect’s new “solution” or cost sheet yet? Remember: If we vote for Base2, no on-site parking will be required and the proposal can legally go ahead as originally planned, sans on-site parking.

How does Base2 “help fix our downtown parking problem”? Vote “no” on 2A, and defeat Base2.
