Letter: Local help for a global problem

Local help for a global problem

As a member of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, I would like to thank Pitkin County Commissioner Steve Child for his efforts to address climate change on a local as well as on a national level. Last week, Child spoke at the National Farmers Union convention in Wichita, Kansas, and requested that the union adopt a policy to support carbon fee and dividend legislation. Carbon fee and dividend is a proposal brought forward by Citizens’ Climate Lobby to internalize the costs of burning carbon-based fuels. It is the policy that climate scientists and economists alike say is the best first step to reduce the likelihood of catastrophic change in the climate.

As a respected longtime Colorado rancher and public servant, Child brings legitimacy and awareness to the concerns ranchers and farmers in the West are facing in the aftermath of a changing climate. Our nation has a rapidly growing population, demanding more energy production in fossil fuels to sustain itself. There is more pressure than ever on our precious Western Slope resources: water, land and air. Studies have shown that carbon fee and dividend legislation would grow the economy, create millions of jobs, strengthen national security, improve overall living conditions and protect our natural resources — all while having a major impact on addressing climate change. Thank you, Steve, for bringing this critically important message to the ranchers and farmers of the West.
