Large, ugly cubes in Aspen

Being a closet Star Trek fan, I can’t keep noticing how all the new buildings in Aspen look like Borg cubes. The Borg was, of course, the nemesis from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” who fashioned themselves as the beehive-like, galaxy-destroying war machine that navigated the stars in large ugly cubes.

“Prepare to be assimilated” was their greeting to all new species in their path. They would take the conquered species and fit them with computer-like machinery and put them to work in their war cubes. Here in Aspen, the first cube sighting was the Aspen Art Museum, and what did the museum do? They assimilated turtles with computer tablets (you museum guys are never going to live that one down).

Now, the new Borg cubes have included color, such as the new cube on Hyman and Hunter Street with red with black trim and the museum in white with a rust-colored cage. Nice touch, but they’re still cubes.

Now, the Aspen City Council has approved a new cube, Base1. Wow, now the Borg will have a base here. I wonder if the Queen Bee Borg will live there.

It would be nice to see more buildings with architectural character like the new Sky Hotel renderings, not these shoulder to shoulder, lot line to lot line, large, no-imagination, new buildings that we are seeing in Aspen. Way to go Sky, long live the Federation.

Live long and prosper,

James H. Perry
