Letter: In support of The Red Brick

As much as I agree with the importance of a science facility to the overall well-being of the community, I see the matter of who will occupy, transform and thrive in the Old Power House space a question of best fit now and into the future, meeting our diverse community needs.

Regarding learning for all ages, STEAM, not STEM, supports whole-brain, whole-person development. The question is not either/or, but what supports the spectrum. If we want ourselves, our children and our community to have the full set of tools necessary to imaginatively grapple with all the challenges before us, let’s support a community center with the greatest breadth and depth.

I am in full support of the Red Brick Proposal for the Power House. It has a solid track record of managing diverse nonprofits in a historic building. The organization is exemplary, evidenced by their 227-page proposal document. Within that document is a full year, month-by-month sample scheduling. Each week of each month has daylong blocks for science center programming alongside rehearsal and presentation space for performance art and additional consistent allocated programming slots for the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, Aspen High School, Senior Center, Theatre Aspen after-school program, Aspen Public Radio, Aspen Words, Yoga, JAS Cafe, AA meetings, Fringe Festival, Meditation and more.
