Letter: In defense of biking the highway
The rains have finally let up, so I’ve begun commuting to town via Highway 82. Therefore, it must be time for the annual letter to the editor to apologize to the commuters on 82 who hate me sharing the road with them. Look, I’ve got a 9-to-5 and no time or funds for a gym membership — commuting by bike is my exercise, my mini-vacation every morning and every evening. Highway 82 is my only choice until the last section of the Rio Grande is paved. I really do make every effort to stay as far over in the breakdown lane as the debris allows. I don’t want to be any closer to a vehicle traveling at 60-plus mph than I have to! I’m also not as young as I used to be. Now that I’m in my 50s, I tend to startle a little more easily, so please don’t swerve into me. Screaming at me (motorcyclist at the Brush Creek intersection on Wednesday morning) is unnecessary, too. I’m just going to work like the rest of you. Please be considerate. I’d really like to live long enough to see my youngest graduate from college in a few years!
