Letter: Imperial terrorism
It is important that U.S. citizens, and Westerners in general, utilize their intelligence and keep in check their emotions when considering the constructed “conflict” between the West and the Muslim world and reject the deranged narratives fueled by media that a battle for “civilization” is underway between the Muslim and Christian-Judeo worlds.
A familiarity with history and world politics illustrates that the 9/11 attacks, Charlie Hebdo attack and most recent Paris attacks are direct results of U.S. and Western colonialism (power control and exploitation) in lands the West has no business occupying — Israel being the greatest example. The combatants involved in the above attacks have made this very clear. To identify these combatants as “terrorists” requires acknowledgement of the far more consequential terrorism (death and destruction) that accompanies Western colonialism. Indeed, Westerners are the initial and far more effective “terrorists” if we are to use this media-laced, emotionally charged language.
So, it is time that citizens of imperialist countries cease being surprised when individuals and groups defend their homelands and life. More importantly, it is time to closely examine and hold accountable those Westerners who colonize — terrorize — others and subsequently expose all Westerners to the “terror” of those who have every right to defend themselves and their homeland. Hopefully, with some careful thought, citizens of this and other nation-states of the West might come to realize that those who profit from and push for U.S. and Western colonialism are the true terrorists that must be destroyed.
