Letter: Hug an Elk

Elks Lodges across the country are recognized as places where neighbors come together, families share meals and children grow up. Elks invest in their communities through programs that help children grow up healthy and drug-free by undertaking projects that address unmet need and by honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

The Aspen Elks Lodge No. 224 lives up to these same ideals of service to the community. The Elks understand the important role skiing and snowboarding play in our valley, and among numerous other causes they support, they provide Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club with scholarship funds each year — and have done so for nearly 20 years in a row!

Their most recent grant arrived a few weeks ago and will allow AVSC to enable deserving children to participate in its programs this winter. They’ll become better, safer skiers and snowboarders and will learn and gain so much more. In the words of one recent scholarship applicant: “Another reason I want to AVSC again us because in my school I don’t have many friends because I’m special and that’s what my parents say. When I go to with AVSC I make a lot of friends and for the first time I feel like I’m worth something.”

Thanks to Aspen Elks Lodge No. 224 for its continued support for the families we serve — and for its support of so many local organizations. It helps make our community the special place it is. Bravo!
