Letter: Giving back or taking away?

Mark Hunt said he wanted to build Base2 to “give back” to the community. Base2 having been rejected, it looks like it’s now payback time.

My friend Mario Zulian has operated the EcoSteam car wash and detailing operation at the Conoco station in Aspen for several years. Utilizing only one garage bay and a little driveway space, he provides a valuable service: affordable (for Aspen), eco-friendly, quality car washing and detailing in a convenient location. He also employs several hardworking people.

Mario opposed the redevelopment of the Conoco site into the defeated Base2 lodge. He also wrote a letter to The Aspen Times recommending converting the site to a green-energy station, a use consistent with Aspen’s green image (“A green gas station and thinking outside the ‘box,’” Dec. 4). The other day I found out how an active, contributing resident of Aspen is rewarded for his civic involvement.

Mario’s month-to-month lease on the garage bay and driveway has been terminated. The landlord, controlled by Hunt, has the right to do this. I don’t know the reasons. I can’t be sure they relate to Mario’s opposition to Base2 or his (I thought well-reasoned) letter suggesting a green-energy station. But after years operating his business there, the timing seems curious.

When Mario finds a new location for his business in Aspen, I urge everyone to support him and use his services. Mario is the kind of person we need in Aspen.
