Letter: Give new protection to view plane
Dear Mayor Steve Skadron and City Council members,
Now you can see the breathtaking views from Galena Plaza toward Red Mountain, Hunter Creek, Smuggler Mountain, Rio Grand and John Denver parks, Red Butte and downvalley sunsets.
The 12-foot-high curtains are gone in the Library Park Plaza (Galena Plaza), which were installed for Kent Reed’s play. The curtains were blocking the most spectacular, longest and widest views remaining anywhere in downtown Aspen.
At 4 p.m. Tuesday, you are going to tackle two hot topics for the fall: view planes and City Hall office-space needs.
View planes are the real billion-dollar industry in Aspen. The better the view, the more money the property commands. The ongoing loss of Aspen’s downtown view planes and protected view planes is what triggered Referendum 1 and the moratorium.
As part of your community outreach, and with the moratorium on development in place, let’s start the public process to determine if the Library Park Plaza should be added as a protected view plane and a specially designated space or developed into a new City Hall that’s 16 to 20 feet in height.
