Letter: Former sheriff endorses Van Beek for Eagle County

Eagle County residents,

In the upcoming general election, there is a lot of emphasis on the sheriff candidates having law enforcement experience and little about leadership skills. As an officer and administrator for more than 35 years, which involved working at a large metro police department, at a local resort department and as your elected county sheriff for 20 years, I learned that the real skill needed to be sheriff is leadership!

Good officers don’t necessarily make good supervisors, let alone good leaders. Cops are trained to do things right, and leaders have the responsibility to do the right thing. It’s time to pick a leader, someone who is honest and straightforward and will use common sense, someone with no hidden agendas or special-interest conflicts, someone with integrity who will listen to and respect others’ viewpoints and someone with integrity who believes in the Constitution and won’t forget whom they work for!

I believe James Van Beek is the right choice to be your next sheriff.

A.J. Johnson

Eagle County sheriff (1983-2003), Grand Junction
