Letter: Creating community support and resources

This year I began mentoring seventh-graders in a pre-collegiate program in Basalt. The program mentors students who hope to be the first generation in their family to attend higher education. I will be their mentor until they graduate high school. It is a very successful program that has been in the valley since 2003.

Most of the students in my group are Latino. We are fortunate to be in a school district and a town that has “safe harbor” rules. I know that must make it easier for the kids. But at the same time I can imagine that they and their families might still experience stress by the new Immigration and Customs Enforcement rules and the narrative of the Trump administration. These students may never know when everything they have known will change. Getting into college may be the least of their problems.

The Statue of Liberty no longer represents a welcoming country and I am very saddened by this, as I am sure many of you are. So to put this sadness into action, and under the guidance and training of the American Civil Liberties Union, a group of Roaring Fork Valley citizens have joined together to create a group called Amigos De Inmigrantes/Friends Of Immigrants. This group will provide information resources for our immigrant friends and neighbors during this time of uncertainty and threat. We are working to connect established support services in the valley. If you want more information about what we are doing, please contact us at amigosdeinmigrantes@gmail.com or our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Amigos-de-Inmigrantes-712081008974558.
