Letter: Coach Sirko’s lasting legacy

Coach Sirko’s lasting legacy

This year marked a milestone for Aspen High School’s football program with the seventh consecutive appearance in the playoffs and the departure of coach Mike Sirko and family from leading the Skiers.

It is understated that Aspen High School, the students and parents owe coach Sirko a debt of gratitude. We have been lucky to have a coach of his caliber at our school and the lasting impact he has made on his players has given them critical life lessons in discipline, dedication and overall teamwork. He has taught them that if they put their full effort into a seemingly impossible task, it becomes possible and achievable. This can be said for many coaches and mentors in our children’s life, but in coach Sirko’s case — he is the real deal.

He has taught them to apply these values in all phases of their life and to persevere with full desire and dedication in everything they do. The unwavering commitment and support he has shown to each athlete to help give them the tools to be men cannot be measured. This impact is clearly seen in the emotion that the team has in return for their coach.

Coach Sirko has built a program “brick by brick” and his legacy will live on — both on the football field and through the character he has helped shape in each player. We are all excited to open the next chapter for Aspen football and know it is on solid ground, and realize football is not the only sports program at the school that has exceptional coaches and support at our school.

Aspen High School is truly blessed by its wonderful, staff, teachers and coaches — it is rare today to find a system as strong as ours.
