Letter: Clapper is worthy of our support

Clapper is worthy of our support

We have known Patti Clapper for more than 20 years. She is precisely the kind of intelligent, hard-working, moral person we need to elect as a Pitkin County Commissioner. As a 35-year registered nurse, she understands and will work to improve valley-wide mental health and senior service deficits, including suicide prevention. Patti knows that growth is a mandatory component of our community’s continued appeal, but that growth must be managed in a way that promotes long-term objectives over the interests of quick-buck developers who expect elected officials to help them build too big and too high with no feeling of fellowship with others. Patti supports conservation easements and progressive use of open space for locally grown foods, as well as the state ballot question requiring GMO foods to be labeled, and she has a decades-long record of environmental protection.

Patti’s opponent is a self-described right-of-center Republican and member of the Republican Party who is running as an independent as a matter of political efficacy. Independent for now, Republican the day after the election. Which of his current positions will he be espousing next spring?

In Patti Clapper, we have a person worthy of our support and our votes, a Democrat in heart and mind who will serve the people of Pitkin County with honor, character and concern. Let’s all elect Patti Clapper.

Aspen must house its workforce

I’m writing in strong favor of the affordable housing project that is under discussion with the county, and feel that Mick Ireland’s commentary Feb. 22 in the Daily News of hit the nail on the…
