Letter: City helped museum prosper

Dear Mayor Steve Skadron and honorable members of Aspen City Council,

This week, the Aspen Art Museum, in conjunction with city staff, formally returned 590 N. Mill St. to the city of Aspen. We want to thank the council and the residents of Aspen for providing our home for nearly 40 years.

In 1979, the Aspen Art Museum took over the old Holy Cross building and began our journey as a cultural institution in Aspen. Thanks in large part to this donated space, the museum was able to grow and prosper. It is our most sincere hope that the next tenant will benefit as greatly as we did.

At 590 N. Mill St., we employed 25 individuals and served more than 25,000 visitors annually. Now, in our new home, with more then 70 full- and part-time employees, we have welcomed more than 80,000 visitors in the eight months we have been open. We look forward to the next chapter in our institutional history and will always acknowledge our humble beginning and the vision of Aspen’s city leaders to see the possibility of granting valuable city property to an upstart nonprofit.

We are truly grateful and know well from experience that in order to succeed, you must dream big.
