Letter: Checks and balances

I woke up Sunday morning really happy and full of hope. The reason is because “Saturday Night Live” the night before totally spoofed Donald Trump pretty much throughout the whole show. After that, I read about the lecture that Mike Pence received from the cast of “Hamilton.”

While Pence can handle the boos and jeers from that night the president-elect did not get any of it at all. Not surprising, really. It shows who is the adult on that team. What a relief that is. Thank God we are in a country this day and age where the average citizen can let office-holders like Trump and Pence know how they feel. Thank goodness we live in a country where these artist types won’t be thrown in jail that night or the next day. It was not that long ago when the likes of J. Edgar Hoover, Roy Cohn and Sen. Joseph McCarthy completely destroyed American lives and livelihoods for much less or for nothing at all. People like that who ran the House Un-American Activities Committee. Very un-democratic and anti-American people at that.

There are people about to be in government soon who have the same values. Fortunately there is a critical mass on the other side that is not afraid to stand up to these thugs and gangsters. The anti-thug and anti-gangster group includes a lot of different types. Artists, creative types, straight people, gay people and minority groups. They are afraid of what hard right turns this next administration may try to pull off, but culturally they are going to keep this next administration in check. Most likely how the counter culture tried to do in the mid-to-late ’60’s. It will not be pretty.

I am sure the hard-liners in Pitkin County and beyond will give me a lot of hell for this letter. They may accuse me of disrespecting Trump and his hoodlums. Maybe even the office of the presidency. However, I do respect the office and the U.S. government. I really respect President Barack Obama and his family. I will give Trump a chance but his vulgarity in a lot of how he operates is terrible. His past disrespect of Obama and almost everything great about this country is proof. Just look how he treats everybody. With Trump it is all about Trump.

More kindness, less judgment with Mulcahy

I would like to make a comment to Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority, city of Aspen, Aspen Skiing Co., etc. with the ongoing Lee Mulcahy drama that has infested our community. In fact, it really applies…
