Letter: Central Park on the Roaring Fork

Let’s copy Telluride’s gem of a park. Telluride’s park has a sizable stage used for concerts, film-festival offerings and live stage productions regularly. Telluride’s park has play areas and picnic areas. It attracts folks from all over the world with its lively programing.

The fine town of Basalt has a riverfront parcel (previously the trailer park) that could easily match Telluride’s gem with a venue for festivals, concerts and even an ice-skating rink.

Imagine a terraced indoor-outdoor restaurant located just upvalley from the Rocky Mountain Institute building with a half-shell stage (or some such) just beyond, facing east — the scene might rival the old Tavern on the Green! Unlike many other parks, Basalt’s park would have the unique, unobstructed presence of the river. One might elegantly dine just a few feet from the water’s edge before or after some divine live musical offering (Nadja?) and then stroll through old town Basalt.

Count me in — I’m ready for dinner, a concert and a little shopping. Oh, wait! Before music and dinner, a kayak adventure; boat landings are already in place. Potentials for this waterfront playground are perhaps innumerable. Yes! Public meetings are today at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall and Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the library. Let’s develop a place that invites vitality to Basalt and our sense of levity. Come on — let’s play!
