Letter: Building is incongruent with area

Visiting Aspen in July, I was shocked at the size and design of the new Aspen Art Museum. The building is out of scale with adjoining buildings and incorporates none of the traditional architectural features that make Aspen unique.

Contemporary buildings in historic settings are acceptable if they are sensitive to existing building scale and local architectural traditions. The new Aspen Art Museum is neither, unfortunately. This is particularly shocking given that the art museum is responsible for its insensitive design. The blame for this poorly designed building, however, must be shared by all the city agencies that approved it, not just the art museum.
