Letter: Bill McEnteer for Basalt fire board

Basalt Fire District voters,

I am writing a quick letter of support for Bill McEnteer running for the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District. I have been a volunteer firefighter in the valley for 35 years and have family members, present and past, who have served on very important fire protection boards. I have watched board members come and go with diverse levels of commitment and success.

For many voters, the district fire protection boards are just taken for granted. We all know that if there is an emergency, they will just show up — always! Voting is usually calling a fire department friend and asking them who to vote for. This election is important and deserves you taking time to participate. There are good people running, and hopefully you will take the time to find out who might best serve you.

I would encourage you to vote for McEnteer, as I have served with him on the Aspen Volunteer Department and I can assure you there are very few people in this valley who have the dedication to, and love of, the fire service that McEnteer possesses. For a few years he was a member of the Aspen and Basalt departments, and after retiring from Aspen, served for five years as the Basalt volunteer president. During that time he attended nearly every board meeting as a volunteer representative. The result is that he has a wealth of knowledge about fire departments, district boards and what it takes to move a district into the future.

Throughout his long firefighting career, he has been instrumental in the creation of programs benefiting firefighters and promoting safety. He is outspoken when he needs to be and thoughtful in his efforts on the district’s behalf. In short, he would make a great Basalt and Rural Fire Protection board member. I encourage you to vote for Bill McEnteer for the four-year post.
