Letter: Bill gives patients freedom

Please support House Bill 1361: Patient Choice of Pharmacy, by contacting your Colorado state senator. This bill allows patients, not insurance companies, to choose where to get their medications. It will be voted on sometime next week.

Bill summary:

A health plan or pharmacy benefits manager may not:

1. Restrict a person from selecting their choice of pharmacy.

2. Impose a different payment, fee or any other costs on the person for selecting the pharmacy of their choice.

3. Restrict access for the person by denying a pharmacy participation in the network if a pharmacy agrees to all terms and conditions, including reimbursement.

More pharmacy health plans are moving to a benefit design that excludes local pharmacies. Many plans require patients to have their medications dispensed through mail order and/or specialty pharmacies. House Bill 1361 simply allows your local community pharmacist to dispense medications to patients.

health care costs will not rise as a result of this bill. Twenty-seven states have patient-choice laws despite rhetoric it will lead to higher health care costs. These laws date back to the 1990s.

Please contact your state senator today if this is important to you! Kerry Donovan at 303-866-4871 or kerry.donovan.senate@state.co.us
