Letter: An inspiring figure

Gregg Anderson will be inducted into the Aspen Hall of Fame today. He is most deserving of this honor. In his 40-plus years here, he has exemplified the true nature of living in and being part of the Aspen community.

From the 1970s to just last year when he became chaplain emeritus for the Aspen Chapel, Gregg fostered its growth, and it is now home to an open, inclusive Christian and interfaith community alongside the Aspen Jewish community. He often referred to himself as the “cloakroom attendant” of this welcoming iconic wayfarer’s chapel located at the entrance to Aspen. Those who have attended Sunday services, holiday services and special occasions at the chapel know that Gregg was the open, inclusive, compassionate and funny chaplain and keeper of this spiritual place that to this day welcomes all people — locals and guests.

In addition to his work at the Aspen Chapel, Gregg collaborated with Helen Klanderud to form Aspen Open Door mental-health services and with Lenny Weinglass to grow the Aspen Buddy Program, which he founded. Gregg’s brother, Tom Anderson, also is being inducted in recognition of his efforts to rally and unite our community around winter sports to make Aspen Winternationals a reality.

Congratulations to Gregg and all of this year’s inductees. Your inspiring presence and spirit are important and valuable reminders that working together in cooperation and collaboration is a long-term winning strategy, and we thank you for your contributions toward making Aspen the truly unique place it is today.
