Letter: A world-class upgrade at Highlands
Hats off to the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club, its donors and Aspen Skiing Co. for making one of the best cruising and training runs ever even better! Golden Horn and Thunderbowl have been one of my favorite cruising, training and racing runs since 1970, but thanks to AVSC, its donors and Skico, snowmaking capabilities have been greatly expanded along with regrading and reconfiguration of portions of the hill. Golden Horn and Thunderbowl now have top-to-bottom, side-to-side snowmaking, the mogul course has been relocated and improved, and the uphill transition between Golden Horn and Thunderbowl is now downhill. The result is that what was a great run, is now a truly world-class training and racing venue with reliable, quality snow and enough room to accommodate multiple alpine training lanes and full-length courses while also providing great training facilities for freestyle moguls and aerials with plenty of room for great skiing for the public. AVSC and local athletes have long enjoyed excellent Skico training venues on Straw Pile, Thunderbowl and Racer’s Edge, but this is the first time multiple lanes of full-length, full-width training have been available early in the season on reliable, high-quality snow. I am confident that these improvements will enhance the opportunity for AVSC athletes to reach their full potential.
In addition to greatly improved training opportunities for AVSC, the improvements also allow Aspen High School, Colorado Rocky Mountain School and Town League competitors’ enhanced access to high-quality training and competition opportunities. Thank you to all that helped make this extraordinary facility a reality.
