Letter: A true Olympic hero

I want to share a little “Olympic something” with you. I have known Simi Hamilton since birth. My wife and I were in the same Lamaze class with his parents as we prepared for the arrival of our kids.

I have watched him grow and mature from crayons to computers — from three-mile Ex-Ed hut trips to the world stage of cross-country skiing. He has always demonstrated special gifts. Now he is in Russia representing his country and competing with the elite of the world at the Sochi Olympics.

On Feb. 14, he took time out of his super-crazy-busy Olympic competitor schedule and Skyped with my daughter’s first-grade class in an elementary school in Memphis, Tenn.!

Yes, he and Rita have been pals and classmates since first grade, but he didn’t have to share some of his precious personal time to visit with a classroom full of 8-year-olds, complete strangers, and mesmerize them with stories of the incredible adventure he is on and how he got there. He made an impression on those kids that will last a lifetime!

That young local boy has been displaying his physical prowess for years, but on Friday he demonstrated that he is more than an athlete. He is a man of profound character, generosity and kindness of heart. His future is bright, and the world will be a better place as he goes out, explores it and makes his impression on it.

I am more proud of Simi Hamilton today than I have ever been. And Aspen/Snowmass, you should be, too.
