Letter: ‘A stinker of a column’

Roger Marolt, for whom I have a lot of respect, wrote a stinker of a column after the recent elections.

Roger writes that voting is “a waste of time,” and we shouldn’t “get too worked up over election outcomes” because, in effect, politics is just a spectator sport about which voters have little influence. This completely misses the point, confusing politics with democracy.

We have state and national elections only once every two years. The real work of democracy happens in the intervening 729 days.

It’s not the case that citizens get just one chance to elect their leaders, and then must spend the next two years being led. Politicians don’t actually lead; they follow public opinion. It’s up to citizens to tell their elected representatives what they want and to create the political will for it.

You voted on Election Day, you got a sticker, good for you. That’s the easy part. If you really want things to change, you need to make your voice heard every day.
