Letter: A project I can support

A project I can support

Kudos to our Aspen City Council and mayor for recognizing and approving a project we should have been looking for: One that offers truly affordable lodge rooms with no demands for variances for single-family house units, height restrictions or affordable housing — and a workable solution for parking.

As a Harvard architect and urban designer and a part-time resident of Aspen since the late 1950s, I have watched the town evolve from a classic ski town of affordable lodges filled with young folk and ski families to one that seems to serve the 1 percent. Emblematic is the first time I came to Aspen and stayed at the old Jerome Hotel — it was a dorm room for eight with four bunk beds. Spartan, but we got to Aspen and could ski.

It is great, too, to see the feel of the old mining town reflected in the architecture of Base1. The post and beam with cross-bracing of the framework and warm wood of the interior is reminiscent of the town’s old mining structures such as the iconic “Tippler”.

After so many letters written to urge us to “save” the wonderful feeling of Aspen, it is a pleasure to be writing in favor of a project, rather than against. It is inspiring to see the council and the developer work together, without excessive demands on either side, toward a mutual goal.
