Letter: A matter of time

Rule 9, Section A of the Republican National Committee is analogous to Amendment 25, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. Both documents provide procedures to declare the seats of a candidate and of a president, respectively, to be vacant.

Should the RNC evoke Rule 9, Section A, Donald Trump will immediately file suit in federal court to question its authority. When that happens, his suit will make its way from a district court to an appellate court to the John Roberts Supreme Court in record time. He will lose.

Trump’s debates with Hillary Clinton are scheduled for Sept. 26, Oct. 9 and Oct. 19. His bluster and selective inattention will not work in those formats. He can skip them all if he dares. If he participates, his deficiencies will be more obvious and will put more pressure on the RNC to remove him for exhibiting what may be called a politically significant character disorder. The earlier this happens, the sooner the RNC can start picking up the pieces.
