Letter: A bitter pill to swallow

A bitter pill to swallow

Editor’s note: This letter was originally addressed to Aspen Times columnist Roger Marolt, in regards to his two previous columns on the selection of the skiers for the U.S. Ski Team in the 1984 Winter Olympics.

As one of Mark Tache’s coaches at the Aspen Ski club, I want to congratulate you for confronting a difficult and tragic decision. Not only was it a terrible blow to the racers involved, Bill Marolt’s decision hurt our community on several levels. We lost a reason to draw together to celebrate a proud moment for the town, an affirmation of the Olympic spirit brought home. Dreams of the younger racers emulating their heroes were dashed. Support for ski racing at both the local and national level diminished. Where there should have been joy and pride, there was bitterness and disappointment.

I hope airing the issue will help avoid a similar decision in the future.

Peter Looram
