Learn about gun range before decision

The Basalt shooting range has existed since the mid-1960s. It was established to allow the 4-H kids to have a safe place to learn to shoot. At that time, there were about 400 people living in Basalt. That population has since grown to more than 4,000. This also means there is more usage of the range. The people who use the range come up for many reasons, to shoot for recreation, to instruct, to learn, to train (as with the local law enforcement community) or to “sight in” for hunting. These are responsible people that are using a facility that has proven safe for years.

The area is ideally located in a basin area that affords a natural barrier to town and the surrounding areas.

Over the years, it has seen many improvements. There has been fire mitigation as well as noise mitigation. This is not to say there couldn’t be more work done. There have been several ideas that have been brought up for such improvements.

There has been a lot of misinformation about the range in the weeks since the fire. Before there is any decision regarding this, we need to find out the possibilities for the future.

There is a meeting scheduled for Aug. 21 at the Basalt High School at 7 p.m. Please attend and find out what is going on before any decision is made. There are two sides to every story. Please come, open-minded, and listen to what may be the answers for the future of this area.
