Housing requires bold, inventive solution

I’m usually a fan of Tony Vagneur’s writing, but his suggestion that all affordable housing should be provided by employers is rather simplistic.

Not every working citizen has a big corporate employer. What about the seamstress who has her own business? Or the mountain guide? The freelance copyeditor? The house painter? The maid? The irrigation service tech who snowplows in the winter?

Aspen has a huge cadre of independent workers who keep the town running, and many work several jobs to survive. The solutions will have to be as bold and inventive as Aspen is.

And please, Auden Schendler, don’t pit housing against parks and open space. The real rival for housing space is commercial and free-market residential development.
