Caucus speaks out against Aspen-Pitkin County Airport expansion
The Woody Creek Caucus Planning Committee continues to have grave concerns regarding the expansion of the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, so much so that we will be continuing our research regarding options outside of an all-out runway expansion.
We will provide the information we uncover to the Board of County Commissioners and county manager. We are hoping that the information will be read directly by the BOCC members rather than being filtered through airport and county administrative staff.
We are hoping the BOCC members will realize the time has come for them to do their own research and investigation. It’s time for the BOCC members to consider the forever change they will bring to our valley with a major airport runway expansion; that they will break trust with their constituents regarding the quality of life for humans, wildlife and nature that is the reason we all live here.
There are ways to bring in new-generation commercial jets without having to expose the entire valley to huge general aviation aircraft such as 737s and Gulfstream 650s. By keeping the maximum takeoff weight of all the aircraft under 100,000 pounds, there can be modifications to the existing runway to accommodate the wingspan issues.
For many, this expansion will be a make-or-break decision on whether or not our county government is really interested in keeping the Roaring Fork Valley a beautiful, environmentally healthy and desirable place to live. We look forward to further discussion on alternative ideas to accommodate a new generation of commercial aircraft and continuing the small-town feel that attracts so many tourists to our valley.
Thank you for your time.
