A new locals pub?

After reading the article in the Aspen Daily News about the winner of the city’s competitive process to select the new tenants for the old Bentley’s space, now occupied by Justice Snow’s, a couple of obvious questions come to mind.

The month-long process is unique, and one might wonder what it would be like to do business with other departments of the city if they could produce results that fast.

Also, it is a wonder why the city did not release its complete list of criteria for the selection process or that at least one newspaper did not do any investigation into the components of the scoring system. Four-thousand-three-hundred-seventy points is a lot of points.

The results in the Aspen Daily News show Elk Mountain first, Highlands second, Hayden third. If those results are correct and not misprinted, why was Highlands not considered in the final ballot?

Also, it seems strange that a group that does not have a business in the city and whose owners do not live here won the city’s locals’ business selection process.

Are they hiring locals exclusively? Will this subsidized locals’ business cater to locals’ tastes, or will it really be a retail outlet for their Willits brewery products and not offer a wide selection of draught brews? We already have the Aspen Brew Pub doing business without subsidies. What will this non-local subsidized brewery pub do to that business?
