A bold, eloquent stand by county commissioners

Before I moved to the mountains full time, a friend told me that what I would love as much as skiing, mountain biking and the daily experience of gratitude that I lived in such a beautiful place was the unique simpatico I would feel with my neighbors and friends here.

“People wind up living in cities for all kinds of different reasons, including by accident,” he said. “But everyone lives in the mountains with the same intention. That makes living here even more special.”

Nothing has made me more aware of that collective simpatico than the eloquent open letter the Pitkin County commissioners wrote to the Trump family, urging them to align their obvious love of this place with a commitment to refute the current administration’s denial of climate change and work to preserve what makes it so beautiful now that they have the power and influence to do so. That these representatives spoke with such grace, truth and passion makes my heart burst with pride. No matter our political affiliation, income bracket or station in life, we mountain people are all avid stewards and disciples of this gorgeous planet. What better evidence than this amazing plea could there be to demonstrate how our connection to nature truly does nourish our inner beauty.

I would like to thank them for writing it, and you for publishing it.
