Letter: Council not equipped to make water decisions
The actions of the Aspen City Council to preserve conditional water rights the city holds to build two reservoirs on Castle and Maroon Creeks are an outrage. The mayor and council are not developers, nor are they the handmaidens of those who would profit from the land. They are stewards for the future, to conserve and administer the assets under their jurisdiction.
Once the rights are preserved, political pressure, fueled by the money to be made, will build on our elected officials to exploit them. Please urge the council members to honor their trusteeships, to renounce these rights and so protect the inheritance of their children and ours.
