Letter: Aspen schools need your help
It is an unfortunate reality that our school district must again ask the community to support our schools and their students in the polls, but very fortunate that we live in the great community we do. The state of Colorado has yet to fully meet its obligation to our district, creating a gap of around $2.1 million. Because of the amazing support from our community in the past, we have been able to continuously grow and adapt to the needs and wants of our students, even without full financial support from the state.
Working for the school district for the past nine years as a classroom teacher and current technology specialist, I am thankful to have become part of a school and community that cares so deeply about the education of our youth. Getting to know so many families from my time in the classroom has given me an overwhelmingly positive impression of how valued our schools are in the Aspen and Snowmass community. It is this value that continues to allow our district to provide great programs and staff that seek to reach the “whole-child” including our World Language, Support Services, Outdoor Education, Experiential Education programs and much more throughout K-12.
So I ask that everyone who has a stake in the educational quality of our community vote “yes” on ballot initiative 2D in Aspen and 2A in Snowmass. The continuation of the 0.3 percent city sales tax is a great way to help give our community the power to support what is important to us, education. The small property tax in Snowmass would also give a much-needed boost to school revenue that translates directly into programs, staff, and the upkeep needed to continue the excellence we have come to, and should, expect from our school system.
My extended time in the district has only strengthened my first impressions of how great this community and its schools are. I now look forward to having my own children experience what a top-tier public education program looks like and how it can guide them to future success.
Please help us continue our rise to the top. Vote “yes” on 2D in Aspen and 2A in Snowmass.
