It’s time to crack down on Durant speeders

Dear Editor:

As I have previously written, Durant Avenue residents and visitors endure an unacceptable noise level created by dirt bikes, hotel delivery trucks, Roaring Fork Transportation Authority buses, construction trucks, motorcycles and residential traffic.

One simple solution to this ever-expanding challenge is to post 20 mph speed limit signs because drivers currently have no idea what the speed limit is on Durant Avenue as it’s not posted. It would also give Aspen police an incentive to ticket speeders if small “Noise Ordinance Enforced” signs were posted below the speed limit.

I realize the city doesn’t want unnecessary signage on the streets, but there is no other street in Aspen that’s used as a raceway. Posts are already installed for pay-for-parking on Durant, so the same posts can be used. The uncontrolled speeding on Durant creates a serious hazard to the huge number of bicyclists and skateboard riders who frequent Durant Avenue. The speed on Durant Avenue needs to be controlled before people are injured.

I will be submitting to City Council 10 pages of signatures of residents or visitors on Durant Avenue who request the speed limit on Durant be posted and who feel the ongoing noise disturbance on Durant night and day should override the city’s decibel readings.
