It’s May Day (also Lei Day in Hawaii for those tuned into the Island vibe) and this weekend is the first since Thanksgiving that you won’t have access to lift served skiing on one of the four Aspen ski hills.

With the warm up this week and the fact that we are into May, you just might be ready for a respite from five months of ski Saturdays. But if not, there is still plenty of snow out there for those willing to skin or hike up high. Cross-country skiing and hut trips in the spring hold an appeal for some and tracks are still available a short drive away at A-Basin everyday until June. 7.

But for the rest of us who are still in town, and that number is small based on the number of cars and the empty seats at the J-Bar, the question is “What do we do now?”

Well… you could…

Go to a yoga class. Take a hike. Go for a bike ride. Hit some golf balls. Get on the river. Throw a Frisbee in the Rio Grande Park. Take a swim at the ARK. Climb a rock or a climbing wall. Walk up Buttermilk. Get on the river.

Or… you could…

Pay your bills. Work out a budget. Clean the mud room. Paint the porch. Put your ski clothes in winter storage. Get your bike tuned. Hose off the dust from the desert storms. Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. Sweep the driveway. Make a lei.

And if none of that sounds appealing you could…

Read a book. Work on your screenplay. Answer your e-mails. Sort through your snail mail. Toss out the November magazines. Play with the kids. Bake a cake, or a pie. Go to the movies. Watch the Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon. Buy the Pacquiao-Hatton bout on HBO pay-per-view Saturday night. Tune into the Nugs and the Mavs in the NBA playoffs on Sunday afternoon. Go to the J-Bar and have a beer.

Or you could do what I plan on doing. You could take a nap.

We’re all, of course, a little different. But there’s a bet here that you could benefit from a day in bed. That’s right, a day where all you do is kick it back, pull up the covers, turn the pillow to the cool side and catch as many zzz’s as feels right. Especially on these cool early spring days, when the clouds shower us with go-to-bed weather.

I’m not talking about a power nap here, or sleeping in because the night before was a little rough, or because you think a cold might be coming on. No, I’m talking full-fledged hooky. A day that is taken for the sake of taking a day. It is about you and only you. It is “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” without the Ferrari or the parade.

Whatever you decide to do, this weekend is yours. No pressure. Just enjoy.
