Brightwell: Criticism of parking practices
Nearly seven years ago, our daughter died trekking Capital Peak. The entire town of Aspen responded with incredible compassion and generosity during the toughest week a parent can imagine. Hotels, restaurants, Mountain Rescue Aspen, the Aspen Times and many others reached out to us to offer comfort and compassion. We have come to love the locals and our older daughter and husband have chosen to call Aspen home.
Sadly, while visiting and assisting them with their move to Burlingame over Easter weekend, we experinced the opposite of Aspen hospitality. Having no advanced knowledge that visitor parking spaces were specific to each of three developments, we received a warning from Will Rutledge & Co. to move one of our cars or be booted or towed. We moved the car promptly The following day Easter Sunday), Rutledge chained our other car in a visitors spot directly across from our daughter’s new unit. When contacted, he demanded we Venmo $150 to his personal account or we would be towed.
Attempts to explain we had no idea of such parking restrictions, were met with arrogance and threats. Others in the neighborhood have experienced similar treatment and are willing to share their stories. We question the legality of this action but wonder is this how Aspen’s affordable housing authority treats its new customers? How does Aspen allow a private concern like Rutledge to harass visitors and demand payment to a personal Venmo? As stated erlier, neighbors we canvassed have been treated rudely and though we have no physical evidence, and understand libel laws, they suggested he influenced the selection of the exclusive landscaping firm and is receiving monetary compensation. We respectfully request Will Rutledge & Co. be investigated for this behavior, as it is a definite contrast to how Aspen should be viewed by visitors and residents alike.
Surely there are more reputable and respectful property management firms who would appreciate the chance to properly serve the affordable housing community.
Respectfully,
Henry Brightwell
