Anderson: We have the right to decide on airport issues

Look carefully at who is supporting airport airfield expansion, and you will see almost all stand to gain financially from more and larger private planes: SkiCo, real estate brokers, chamber resort, financial advisors, owners, and would-be pilots of larger executive jets. Many do not live here. More than half of the 37 “local pilots” who recently signed a full-page pro-expansion ad are not even registered to vote in Pitkin County.
Then look at who wants to keep our airport in scale with the terrain and character of our beloved community: Thousands of hard-working, long-time locals. We are the backbone of this community. We work here, raise our kids here, pay taxes here, vote here, and together have been through the good times and bad. We have no direct financial gain. We are fighting for the health and safety of our families and our community. We know what we are talking about because we live near the airport and hear the deafening noise and smell the jet exhaust.
The commissioners are trying to tell us locals we are not smart enough to decide airport issues. Oh, yes, we are. To maintain our right to be heard, please vote “yes” on 200, and vote “no” on 1C.
