Obituary: Marie Josephine Timms
Longtime Roaring Fork Valley Resident, Marie Josephine Timms passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Heritage Park in Carbondale, Colorado. She was 92 years old. She began her incredible life in Beatrice, Nebraska on February 2, 1921. Her parents were Mary Anna Kopecky and Nicholas Wesley Stolzer.
In 1929 she moved to Los Angeles California with her family including Maternal Grand Parents who relocated from Czechoslovakia through Ellis Island.
In 1949 she sailed in the trans-pacific yacht race from Los Angeles, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. She was the chief cook and bottle washer. The Cutter “Success” came in dead last after 21 days at sea.
As a single mother, Marie put herself through night school and became a legal secretary. She worked for the City Attorney’s office of Los Angeles which was located in the 2nd floor of the control tower at LAX.
In 1974 she followed oldest daughters, Diana and Valerie to Colorado where she and Husband; Avery J Timms purchased property in Aspen as an investment. In the fall of 1976 Marie became a full time resident of Colorado. During her working career in Aspen; she was employed by Judge Weant, Lenny Oates, and Nick Coates.
Marie loved life and she easily made friends. She looked forward to learning something new every day. She was an excellent cook and was always willing to try a new recipe. Her never fail pie crust and lemon meringue pie were famous among friends and family. Marie was a voracious reader which made her very knowledgeable about many subjects. Marie loved to go out to the movie theatre. She was fluent in Astrology and Spanish. She was ahead of her time and very wise. Intuitively, Marie always knew the right thing to say. She had a memorable laugh. Marie always put her family and her close friends first. Marie was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In her 80’s she was an active member of Curves and would go faithfully every day.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Avery Junior Timms, (2006), Children, Valerie Marie Gustaveson, (1976), and Richard Kent Timms, (1981).
She is survived by her Children, Diana Marie Thornock, of Boulder, Colorado; Steven Craig Timms, of San Diego California; Gina Marie Smith, of Santa Ynez, California; Jody Dee Timms, of Fairfax California, and Monica Holly Timms, (John Corcoran) of Snowmass, Colorado; Nine Grand Children and five great grandchildren.
Marie will be remembered for her excellent organization and sharp mind until the very end. She will be dearly missed. Her spirit will always be cherished and remembered by the many lives that were fortunate to have been touched by hers. She told everyone she met to be an explorer; “Go See and Do”.
A celebration of Marie’s life will be held this Friday, 02/21/2014 @ The Frying Pan Kitchen in Basalt, Colorado, 305 Gold Rivers Court, #150; from 5:30 – 7:30. Please join us; (wearing any shade of Blue) and share your story.
