Obituary: Anne Francis Farish

Anne Francis Farish passed away at home in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, the 4th of September 2013, following a brief struggle with cancer. She was a woman known for her elegance, style and independence. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who was deeply grateful for the support and loyalty of her extended family.

Anne was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on the 21st day of November 1929 to Adelle and Charles Francis. The family moved to Houston, Texas, where Anne spent her childhood years and married Stephen Power Farish, Jr in June 1947.

Tragically, Anne was widowed in 1956. In 1959, consistent with her independent spirit, she made a bold decision to move to Aspen with her three young children: Stephen P Farish, III, George R Farish and Martha Farish Oti. Her decision was motivated by her desire for a simpler way of life. She raised her children there and enjoyed the mountain lifestyle, with the natural beauty of the outdoors and lots of opportunity for active recreation, especially skiing.

She also enjoyed Aspen’s stimulating intellectual and artistic communities, especially the summer concert performances held at the Music Festival tent. She continued to be a full-time resident of Aspen for over twenty years, but gradually spent more time back in Houston to be closer to family and friends.

Anne is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Anne’s three children will continue to maintain ties to the Aspen community.

A memorial service celebrating Anne’s life will be conducted on Friday, the 13th day of September in Houston, Texas. Any communications with Anne’s family should be sent to P O Box 56427, Houston, Texas 77256. Additionally, you may leave personal messages on the guest book provided on

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests, with gratitude, any contributions in memory of Anne should be directed to The Aspen Music Festival, 225 Music School Road, Aspen, CO 81611, or the charity of one’s choice.
